1. A common mistake is to look for ideological consistency on the far right, and to become confused when some of the things it claims to stand for sound positive and even progressive. Here’s a thread on how to understand this. 🧵 2. The far right is, and has always been, opportunistic. It has no ideological consistency because it doesn't care: it will steal anyone's clothes if they fit. It doesn't care because it is a psychopathic movement, which treats both people and ideas as mere instruments. 3. I keep hearing, “the Nazis were socialists.” Yes, in the early history of the party there were socialist elements. Yes, Nazi is a compression of "National Socialist". But if you believe the Nazis were socialists, I wonder which other claims of theirs you take at face value. 4. In fact, most of those who make the “Nazis were socialists ” claim are on the far right. They do so to distance themselves from a far-right movement with, er, less-than-positive associations in the public mind. The Nazis, by the time they began taking power, had purged all traces of socialism. 5. These psychopathic movements are never on your side. They might flatter and uplift you when it's convenient for them. But as soon as you cease to be a useful instrument, they will discard you. Look at how Trump sacrifices even his most loyal lieutenants when he has exhausted their utility. 6. You might think they're serving you by beating up someone else, designated as your enemy, but there will always be a need for new enemies, and one day you too could find yourself on a list. There is also a need, to justify emergency powers, for endless crises, to which you might also fall victim. 7. They are not, and never will be, your friends. The thread on one page: skywriter.blue
