@georgemonbiot.bsky.social1. You think you’ve seen it all. You really have not. I’m a hard-bitten journalist of 39 years’ standing, but details of this story made me shout, weep and slap my head. This week’s column + 🧵

This society lauded a police officer who lied and cheated and ruined lives. At last, a reckoning | George Monbiot
As a ‘spy cop’, Bob Lambert callously betrayed innocent women. The official inquiry must ask harsh questions of him – and the state, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

2. If this story were not true, it would be frankly unbelievable. State-sponsored rape, lies and deception on an industrial scale, illegal espionage and then a cover-up and rehabilitation effort operating right across official life, including at prestigious universities.
3. No punishment of the perpetrators. They’ve retired on lavish pensions. They’ve kept their medals and awards, obtained prestigious positions and influence over government. But they have left a legacy of broken lives, shattered minds and pain beyond endurance. *Among entirely innocent people.*
4. What it reveals is that the police in this country are not just institutionally racist, but also institutionally sexist. In fact, what this story shows is institutional rape, committed by the forces of “law and order”.
5. None of this would have come to light were it not for the brilliant investigative work of the COPS campaign, Helen Steel, Rob Evans, Paul Lewis and other campaigners and journalists. The fight for justice continues.
