Some of the litigious corporations that could be identified: Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Mondelēz, Kellogg’s, Danone, Ferrero, Xignux and Heartland Food Products Group, own some of the most well-known UPF companies and products in the world. 2/ The ultra-processed food industry are using the same playbook deployed by the fossil fuel industry, which uses ISDS provisions to make increasing numbers of claims, that slow progress in tackling the climate crisis by stopping countries phasing out fossil fuels and protecting ecosystems. 3/

‘Regulatory chill’ is a key strategy used by routinely by industries including tobacco, alcohol, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, pesticides and mining, to slow governments down, protect their investments and delay and deter progress in society. 4/ Other strategies include casting doubt on scientific evidence, funding favourable research and think tanks, lobbying politicians and regulators, using public relations campaigns stressing “consumer choice” and seeking delays, compromises or exemptions if outright defeat isn’t possible. 5/ ‘Business friendly’ governments have demonstrated time and time again that they are incapable of standing up to powerful business interests unless they are subjected to sustained pressure from below. #systemchangenotclimatechange 6/6 skywriter.blue
