George Monbiot
@georgemonbiot.bsky.social1. What explains the paralysis that seems to have overcome us, as we watch the most powerful nation of Earth spiralling towards fascist dictatorship? Well, a large part of it, I feel, is the surreal, astonishing uselessness of the Democratic Party. 🧵
2. Those who should be mounting a response commensurate with the scale of the threat are either silent or feebly flapping their hands. They should be leading from the front, organising mass demonstrations and impeachment proceedings, pressing the courts to issue contempt arraignments ....
3. Instead, the crisis has exposed the Democratic Party's profound inability to oppose power in any form, an inability that stems from decades of compromise with big funders, big media and other corporate and oligarchic lobbyists. There are some glowing exceptions. But they are few.
4. We cannot look to them or other centrist parties to lead the resistance. The longer people wait for them, the worse things will get. We have to organise this ourselves.
5. In other countries, we need to press our governments: A. to stand firm against the far right on all fronts (eg don't try to compete with them on cruelty to immigrants), B. to create resilient systems independent of the US, C. radically to reform campaign finance to stop it happening here.
6. This *will not happen without mass movements*. Organise, organise, organise. Don't wait for the centre to act. Without intense pressure, it won't.
