🧵 ALERT: At 2pm we'll join the regular SF Board of Supervisors meeting. On the agenda: the mayor's plans for homeless shelters, and anger over another imploding nonprofit and allegations of financial wrongdoing. The fallout: Will the supes force an audit of @sfrecpark.bsky.social? Tune in, find out! If you want to follow along, here's today's agenda sfbos.org

The clerk has called roll. @jackiefielder.bsky.social is not present. We'll let you know if she shows up. Fielder can't make it today, says board president Rafael Mandelman. First up today: the mayor's monthly appearance to field questions from two supervisors. Today, Shamann Walton (D10) and Chyanne Chen (D11) will have the floor. Lurie starts by criticizing the federal ICE enforcement actions happening today. He says his job is to make everyone feel safe in the city. "I'm here to support everyone who is scared and struggling."
He pivots to tout his new proposal, which has several supervisors in support, to "tackle RV homelessness." It includes 2-hr parking limits for oversized vehicles, and it will expand outreach and services. "Simply moving people along isn't a solution." He also says his proposal to move ~$90m in a homelessness service fund (aka Prop C/Our city our home) from permanent housing to more temporary shelter and services will be part of this RV strategy, says Lurie. More on that money move: missionlocal.org

First supervisor Qs come from Sup. Walton. He's telling Lurie that D10 and the Bayview are upset about Lurie's plans to expand a shelter on Jerrold Ave. without consulting community. "Will you pause the proposal" or keep ignoring the community, Walton asks.
Walton says D10, in effect, hosts plenty of services already. Lurie says he's focusing on "the right type of beds" and locations. Jerrold Commons is the right type, adding 82 more beds and will help us "alleviate street homelessness in the Bayview" and bring more necessary clinical services. Lurie says the community has "legitimate asks" and the city has done outreach. Walton follows up: "You may be having conversations, but no one in that area supports it. You can come here and misrepresent. They may not be complaining to you, but they are to me."

Walton: What about shelters by the beach, by Lake Merced, etc? Lurie has reportedly tried to water down a proposal that Walton supports that would force every district to host services. thefrisc.com

Lurie again doesn't back off the Jerrold Commons plan, and he sidesteps any direct response to the idea of more shelters in areas of the city that don't have them, or very few. Next is Sup. Chen, asking Lurie to commit to infrastructure projects in her district, such as the Crocker-Amazon ballfield renovation (partly funded by @sfgiants.com) and replacement of a police station. Lurie promises to work with her closely. That ends the monthly mayoral Q&A. We move into the main agenda. The consent agenda, items 2 through 9, all pass on a voice vote. Note: fees to sell at farmers markets are going up 🥬
Items 10-13 all pass by voice vote as well, including the mayor's establishment of a board of directors for his downtown revitalization district.
It's 2:30 - commendation time. @myrnamelgard7.bsky.social begins with kudos for St. Cecilia's jr. high students who partnered w/St. Anthony's on a donation drive that started with socks for homeless folks (1500+ pairs 🧦 🧦), but they expanded it to shoes and other essentials. How 'bout them kids?
Next up: Sup. Walton with praise for @thatmc.bsky.social, a lover of all things SF, poet, and @sfmta.com driver. He got a lot of press (including from us) a few years ago for his sidewalk poetry readings. He's gained quite a following over the years. He's been a driver for 4 years now. Mc Allen has a poem to share, of course, called Run 174. It gives the students of Willie Brown Middle School, his regular riders, a shout-out: "When the kids rush the bus, it's like a wave breaking at Maverick's..." It's a moving ode to feeling protective and responsible for those kids.
Next is @bilalmahmood.bsky.social to introduce Takeshi Onishi, a Japantown merchant and champion of anime and manga, who just closed his shop after 40 years nichibei.org
www.nichibei.org
Onishi: "Time sure flies." He says his biggest contribution is organizing an anime costume parade for the Cherry Blossom Festival, which until that point was very traditional. "It helped to draw young people to the festival. I'm kind of proud of it."
Mandelman is next with a commendation for D'Arcy Drollinger, SF's first drag laureate. "You really do notice when a drag queen walks in the room," says Mandelman. "You're leaving behind a difficult set of heels to fill." newsroom.ap.org

Drollinger's reign as drag laureate is coming to an end. Hopefully her run as Betty White in the Golden Girls Live Xmas show is not. sfstandard.com
We're now back to the regular agenda. Item 16 and 17 pass without comment: a homelessness services grant and authorization to overhaul Muni train brakes.
Same result for items 18-22: acceptance of grants, gifts, and bond spending. And items 23-27, several appointments to boards/commissions #28-29 on employee compensation and a service union MOU amendment pass without discussion
We're speeding quickly through the agenda 🏃🏼♂️ Items 30-32 all pass. Then the motion to approve an audit of the @sfrecpark.bsky.social, in light of the SF Parks Alliance implosion, also passes without discussion. Somewhat surprising, even though a committee last week held a hearing
The collapse of SF Parks Alliance, which also managed funds for smaller nonprofits, has put those funds in jeopardy. @kqed.bsky.social reported last week that Sutro Stewards had to lay off their employees kqed.org

In 2023 Sutro Stewards avoided disaster after its funding got caught up, no fault of its own, in another city corruption scandal. The money was restored thanks to reporting by @unazurda.bsky.social thefrisc.com

Supervisors are now wrapping up with new business, as well as denouncements of ICE raids. (The downtown immigration court shut down early today.) @bilalmahmood.bsky.social wants improvements in the 311 mobile app for better data on street conditions. We'll pause to remind you that we're in the middle of our Summer Flash Drive, trying to raise $5K this week. If you appreciate our threads, or anything else we do, please pitch in.
