This is the most important thing I've posted ^^. There is much more to read to understand Thiel's mimetic theory and how dangerous it is for the world. #Thiel misapplies #Girard ( #mimetictheory ) for power, not peace.

To understand Trump’s behavior, look to Peter Thiel and Girard’s mimetic theory, a religious-like ideology that justifies scapegoating, chaos, authoritarianism, and endless conflict as political necessities. Mimetic theory teaches that desire is imitation, rivalry is inevitable, and society resolves tensions through scapegoating—a strategy Trump weaponizes by targeting immigrants, the media, and political enemies. Thiel, who views democracy as inefficient, sees chaos as a tool and conflict as the engine of power. The end goal is a post-democratic order, where authority is concentrated in a ruling elite who manipulate desire, control narratives, and maintain power through perpetual conflict and crisis. Mimetic politics doesn’t govern—it destroys, scapegoats, and consolidates power, all under the guise of an unprovable, elitist ideology disguised as truth.
1. Thiel Turns Girard's Anti-Competition Theory into a Pro-Monopoly Justification Girard’s View: Competition is Violent and Self-Destructive Girard argues that competition fueled by mimetic desire leads to violence, destruction, and the scapegoat mechanism. As people and groups imitate each other’s desires, they become locked in zero-sum rivalries that escalate toward conflict. His theory warns against unrestrained competition, suggesting that societies must find ways to mitigate mimetic rivalries to avoid destructive outcomes. Thiel’s View: Competition is Bad… But Because It’s Inefficient Thiel agrees that competition is harmful, but he uses this insight to argue in favor of monopolies. He selectively applies Mimetic Theory to conclude that startups and businesses should seek to escape competition altogether by forming monopolies. In Zero to One, he writes: “Competition is for losers.” His idea is that the most successful companies avoid mimetic rivalries by creating unique, unchallenged market positions where they don’t have to compete. Where Thiel Gets It Wrong: Girard was warning against destructive mimetic rivalries in society, not just in business. He saw competition leading to war, not as a problem of inefficiency in capitalism. Thiel reframes Girard’s critique of rivalry as an argument for eliminating competitors altogether. But Girard was not advocating for monopolistic dominance—he was diagnosing the dangers of human imitation spiraling into conflict. Mimetic rivalry cannot be escaped through monopolization. Even if one dominates a market, new competitors will emerge, and monopolists can still fall into internal mimetic rivalries (e.g., look at Google vs. Facebook vs. Apple).
2. Thiel Ignores the Role of Christianity in Girard’s Resolution of Mimetic Conflict Girard’s View: Christianity Reveals and Resolves Mimetic Violence Girard sees Christianity as the ultimate revelation of the scapegoat mechanism—the crucifixion of Christ exposes the violent cycle of scapegoating and offers a way to break free from mimetic violence through forgiveness and nonviolence. His theory suggests that modern societies still unconsciously repeat the scapegoat cycle, but understanding it can help reduce violence. Thiel’s View: A Secular, Machiavellian Application of Girard Thiel removes the religious and ethical aspects of Girard’s work, reducing it to a strategic framework for power and business success. He does not engage with Girard’s emphasis on the dangers of sacrifice, victimization, and redemption, instead using Mimetic Theory as a tool for gaining an advantage in competition. Where Thiel Gets It Wrong: Mimetic Theory without its ethical dimension becomes cynical and manipulative. Girard’s message was not just about recognizing rivalry but about transcending it through reconciliation. Thiel focuses on escaping competition, but Girard’s deeper concern is how societies can avoid tearing themselves apart. Christianity in Girard’s theory is not an optional add-on; it’s the key to breaking the cycle of violence. Thiel strips away the moral dimension and keeps only the strategic insights.
3. Thiel Misunderstands the Role of Scapegoating in Society Girard’s View: The Scapegoat Mechanism is Dangerous and Needs to Be Exposed Girard’s core insight is that societies maintain order by blaming and sacrificing scapegoats—groups or individuals who are perceived as the cause of social tension. This process is unconscious and cyclical, meaning societies often don’t realize they are engaging in scapegoating until it's too late (e.g., witch hunts, political purges, ideological conflicts). The ethical challenge is to resist this tendency and recognize scapegoats as innocent victims. Thiel’s View: The Scapegoat Mechanism is Useful for Power Thiel seems to accept scapegoating as an unavoidable reality rather than something that should be transcended. In The Straussian Moment, he argues that conflict and crisis are sometimes necessary to reshape society, hinting at a more Machiavellian interpretation of scapegoating as a tool. He has supported figures who weaponize scapegoating in politics, such as Donald Trump, whose rhetoric often creates scapegoats (e.g., immigrants, the media, elites) to consolidate power. Where Thiel Gets It Wrong: Girard’s theory is about exposing and preventing scapegoating, not using it as a political strategy. If Thiel truly followed Girard’s logic, he would be wary of leaders who manipulate scapegoating to maintain control. By supporting figures who intensify mimetic rivalries, Thiel contributes to the very kind of social unrest and violence Girard warns against.
4. Thiel's Technological Utopianism vs. Girard's Warning About Violence Girard’s View: Technology Can Accelerate Mimetic Crises Girard believed that modern technology intensifies mimetic rivalry, making global conflict more likely. He argued that nuclear weapons and AI could lead to apocalyptic scenarios because they escalate mimetic conflicts to unprecedented levels. Instead of solving conflict, technology often amplifies rivalry, competition, and violence. Thiel’s View: Technology is the Escape from Mimetic Rivalry Thiel embraces technology and accelerationism as a way to escape societal problems. He funds radical tech projects (e.g., transhumanism, AI, life extension, and seasteading) based on the idea that innovation can free us from social and political constraints. He sees technology as a way to break free from mimetic rivalry, not as something that could intensify it. Where Thiel Gets It Wrong: Technology doesn’t eliminate rivalry; it often makes it worse. Social media, AI, and surveillance capitalism have exacerbated mimetic conflicts rather than resolving them. Girard would caution that Thiel’s vision of technological escape could backfire, creating even more polarization and rivalry. History shows that technological innovation is often used to dominate and control, rather than to liberate.
Conclusion: Thiel Misapplies Girard for Power, Not Peace Thiel weaponizes Mimetic Theory as a tool for personal and corporate strategy rather than engaging with Girard’s deeper warnings about rivalry and scapegoating. He strips Girard’s theory of its ethical and religious dimension, reducing it to a power playbook. His belief that monopolies, technology, and power structures can "escape" mimetic rivalry contradicts Girard’s insight that these forces often escalate conflict rather than solve it. Ultimately, Thiel sees Mimetic Theory as a way to gain an edge, while Girard saw it as a way to avoid destruction. If Thiel were to fully understand Girard, he might reconsider his support for competitive and divisive political figures, as well as his belief that technology will solve the very mimetic crises it accelerates. Would you like a deeper critique of Thiel’s political applications of Girard’s theory, or an exploration of how Girard’s insights could be applied differently?
