1. Starmer was warned and warned that his benefits cuts were not just cruel and unfair, but a political disaster. He dismissed the warnings, even this week, as no more than "noises off". Now, as the disaster materialises, he's desperately backtracking. Here's an idea: how about listening? 🧵 2. Once again, you must ask yourself what the hell is he playing at? While squeezing the poor for every penny he can extract, he refuses to levy a wealth tax. And guess what? Voters absolutely hate it. We are profoundly attuned to unfairness, and no amount of spin will stop people seeing it. 3. On whose behalf are these disastrous policies imposed? They don't even save money: benefits shortfalls will need to be made up, one way or another, by local authority provision. They might keep the Daily Mail off his back for a day or two, but it'll find another reason to dump on him soon enough. 4. As for the voters, he's burning his base. People didn't vote Labour for even crueller policies than the Tories imposed. They voted for "Change". Perhaps some Reform voters will enjoy seeing disabled people getting beaten up, but that won't translate into votes. It's just loss, loss, loss. 5. He has lost credibility, lost trust and lost votes hand over fist, while gaining precisely nothing from this fiasco. The warnings were crystal clear, and have materialised just as predicted. I can't believe he's a total idiot. So what is stopping him from seeing the blitheringly obvious? 6. Well, the obvious answer is Morgan McSweeney and the rest of the sinister, unaccountable clique that surrounds him. Everything suggests that Starmer is not stupid, but incurably weak and supine. He is yanked about like a puppet by his Machiavellian minders. 7. So maybe Keir Starmer should listen to this. If you don't know what to do with power, if you have no project other than staying in office, no moral core, no plan to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable, no trace of Labour values, perhaps you should step aside for someone who does.
