1. There has been a major effort by that old combination – big business and the far right – to diss foods derived from plants. The meat lobby invests big time in misinformation. And the far right hates “soyboys”, while associating itself with red meat-eating. It's a match made in hell. 🧵 2. The meat and “masculinity” thing is very old and well-established. The anti-plant campaigning is more recent. Here are just a few of the things the meatheads have claimed: Vegetable oils will kill you. It's complete and utter bollocks: theguardian.com

3. Soy will turn you into a woman due to phytoestrogens, or something something. Again, total unscientific bunkum. 4. Almond milk sucks up the world’s water. Yes, there’s a big problem with almonds’ water demand in California. But guess what? More than twice as much irrigation water is used in California to grow forage plants to feed livestock, especially dairy cows. bloomberg.com

5. Dairy milk has much higher water demand than almond milk. This demand is astronomically higher than the best alternatives, such as oat or soya milk. bbc.co.uk

6. Avocados are killing the planet. Yes, there are real issues, but nothing compared to the vast global impacts of, for example, beef. Funny, isn’t it, how they get all concerned about the living planet when they want to diss plant foods, but deny everything when it comes to beef and fossil fuels? 7. Now brown rice will kill you, due to heavy metals. Again, the claims are massively inflated, and likely to be minuscule by comparison to the impacts of eating, say, tuna or sharks, which those grunting “paleo” eaters believe will help them live forever. washingtonpost.com

Brown rice has more arsenic than white. Is it still the better choice?

8. So beware of people attacking plant-based foods. It is highly likely to be part of a coordinated and funded campaign. And highly likely to be wrong. The thread on one page: skywriter.blue
