1/ After years of reports of people from Africa being recruited into the Russian Army under false pretences, Russian warbloggers can't understand why the Global South won't support Russia in the war. "None of our allies are interested in Ukraine's defeat," one complains. ⬇️
2/ Few countries other than North Korea, Iran, Nicaragua, Cuba, and a handful of others have consistently supported Russia in United Nations votes on the war in Ukraine, and only North Korea and Iran have sent weapons and (in North Korea's case only) troops to support Russia. 3/ Instead, Russia has resorted to tricking large numbers of men – particularly from South Asia and Africa – into joining the Russian Army, by recruiting them ostensibly as security guards and making them sign military contracts when they arrive in Russia. 4/ The lack of support from 'friendly' countries has prompted periodic complaints from Russian warbloggers, who castigate their reluctance to assist despite historic ties and trade or foreign aid links with Russia or the USSR. 5/ Kirill Federov complains that the modern system of globalisation, which was driven by the US before Donald Trump began dismantling it, is keeping Russia's erstwhile allies on the sidelines: 6/ "Incidentally, the Global South not only doesn't need Russia's victory in the war, it's even harmful. The point is that Russia and Iran are destroying the global trade system and, consequently, globalisation. 7/ "And this same Global South has become a beneficiary of globalisation; it's only a little unhappy with the West's Papuan-like treatment of it. Otherwise, everything is fine. Business loves peace and quiet, so the Global South wants the conflict in Ukraine to simply freeze. 8/ "Because it's necessary and advantageous for them, and no one there will bother pondering the reasons and demands of the parties. Moreover, a Ukrainian victory would also suit them, because such a victory would once again legitimise globalisation. 9/ "However, Moscow understands this and asks nothing more of the Global South than neutrality. But it improves trade, which is more than useful." 10/ Some countries are even benefitting from the war, such as India – which is selling back to Russia Indian-produced gasoline refined from Russian-exported oil, at a big mark-up – and China, which has effectively made Russia a dependent subordinate power. 11/ Alexey Zhivov notes this sourly: "Our strategic partners from India, China, and Turkey, who are very committed to a "peaceful settlement," are actually the beneficiaries of this war and, unlike North Korea, aren't even risking anything." 12/ "Hence all these mantras about wanting to resolve the conflict right now.
