I've spoken to half a dozen LNP MPs who had no idea about the citizen 'referendum' policy Dutton is backing in who all think it is nuts - but that is not the point. None are willing to push back because party stability these days means blind obedience, not challenge. Dutton has always done this - floated horrendous 'ideas' - but he has always had a leader to push back and clean it up - Turnbull, and then Morrison. Now he's leader, there's no one to do the clean up. So the party goes along with it, even if they don't agree. Because that's unity in the modern era But all of that is beyond the point. Because what Dutton is proposing that the government be given the ability to deport Australians. For the government to be judge, jury and executioner, separate from any due process, to deport people. Oh, but only criminals! Except in this climate, speech can be a criminal act. Protest is a criminal act. Civil disobedience can be a criminal act. Criticising the actions of another nation can be a criminal act. And it's not like we don't know who Dutton deems 'acceptable' citizens and who isn't. Dutton was immigration minister in 2015 when Border Force announced it would be approaching people in the streets to check their visa status - an operation only halted following mass protests and outrage. In 2016, still as immigration minister, Dutton said he believed Malcolm Fraser made "mistakes" in the 1970s and 80s "in bringing some people in" claiming "and we're seeing that today". "We need to be honest in having that discussion. There was a mistake made." (He was talking about Lebanese Muslims) While home affairs minister in 2018, Dutton made up that Victorians were afraid to leave their homes because of 'African gangs', a fear campaign that disappeared as soon as the Coalition lost the Victorian state election. Also in 2018, Dutton identified white South Africans as "the sort of migrants we want to come to our country" and proposed "fast tracking" visas for "persecuted" white South African farmers – because they needed help "from a civilised country like ours". Critical media was "dead to me". In 2019, Dutton accused women held in migration detention on Nauru of "trying...on" rape claims to come to Aust for medical treatment. He claimed, without evidence that about 1000 asylum seekers who came to Australia were of "bad character" but wouldn't explain what that meant. He promised 'details at a later time' which never came. In October 2023, Dutton said temporary visa holders protesting Israel's military action in Gaza should be deported. In February 24, he went further and said if elected, he would alter the migration act to include anti-Semitism as part of the character test, and apply it retroactively to October 7, which would give grounds to deport non-citizen protesters, without a conviction. These are just the ones I can remember. And that's not counting when he boycotted the National Apology to the Stolen Generations, later claiming it was a 'tokenistic' gesture, when he wanted action. Years later, he would torpedo any chance of actual action when he opposed the Voice, falsely claiming it would cause division, all to distract from the historic loss of an electorate to the government in a byelection. And now he is proposing a racist referendum, that is literally designed to divide, all because he's sensing a shift in the electorate away from the LNP. This is a man who doesn't give a shit what he destroys, as long as he is on top. He's never been accountable for any of his bullshit. But because we're a bee's dick from the next election, he's actually experiencing some scrutiny. Given his habit of disappearing for a few days every time there are questions to answer isn't working as well now, he's come up with a racist bell horn. Temu Trump indeed.
